Interesting neighboring towns of Darjeeling



Kurseong
The word Kurseong means ‘the place of White Orchid’. Kurseong lies in the mid way between Siliguri and Darjeeling. This beautiful place is full of natural splendour. Situated at an altitude of 1458 mts, Kurseong is 51 km from Siliguri and 30 km from Darjeeling. Because of lower elevation, Kurseong enjoys a milder climate throughout the year. It is the peace and serenity of the place has attracted many great persons. Guru Rabindranath Tagore composed some of the famous poems and songs in Kurseong. Abanindranath Tagore and great composer Atul Prasad Sen got inspiration for some of their famous works. Kurseong was chosen as home by Sister Nivedita, the great disciple of Swami Vivekananda. Mark Twain also spent some time in Kurseong in 1885.  
Mirik
Mirik is located at a distance of 52 kms from Siliguri and 55 kms from the Bagdogra airport. Surrounded by tea estates, orange orchards and cardamom plantations, the place is being developed as a new hill station. It has got all the facilities for the tourists. Mirik- a nest in the hills is the hill resort at an altitude of 1767 metres. The place has its own special charms like 1.25 km long lake with a floating fountain in the middle of the lake. Siliguri / New Jalpaiguri
The twin Cities of Siliguri and New Jalpaiguri serve as the departure point to Darjeeling, Sikkim and the North Eastern States due to which the place has become very busy and crowded. Tourists come to these towns mainly to change bus or catch trains. The wildlife sanctuary of Jaldhapara can be visited here.
